So yesterday I tried making Gyro from scratch for the first time. It started with making the Gyro meat for which I used 1/2 Ground Lamb and 1/2 Ground Beef and mixed in Cavenders Greek Seasoning, Shallot, Fresh Chopped Parsley, Salt. I shaped the mixture into a cake like shape with the height being the thickness I wanted slices to end up when complete. I put it on the rotisserie for about 35 minutes and below is what I ended up with.
Once I had the meat off the rotisserie and sliced I added @ 1 tsp. of olive oil to a hot skillet and fried the meat for a couple minutes on each side so it would get a little crisp to the texture. When done I warmed up a Greek style pita and added some meat, Tsaziki Sauce (yogurt, cucumber, parsley, shallot), fresh tomato, and parsley. I also roasted some white potatoes in olive oil and greek seasoning with a little lemon. Below is what it looked like before being wrapped up.
I have to say, it came out delicious and I have plenty of leftovers for quick meals and the meat would freeze well which for a single dude makes for quick easy meals in the future. I don’t know how authentic it was as I didn’t peek at other recipes to see what’s normally in Gyro meat but to me it tasted like I wanted. 🙂
